Water Softener Maintenance: A Simple Year-Round Checklist

Most softener failures we get called out for are not broken valves. They are salt bridges, a brine line that clogged, or a system that quietly stopped regenerating after a power outage. Ten minutes of attention a month prevents nearly all of it.

Every month

• Check the salt level and keep the tank between one-third and two-thirds full — overfilling encourages bridging
• Break up any crust with a broom handle; a hard shell over an empty cavity means the softener is regenerating with no salt
• Look for standing water above the salt, which points to a drain or brine line problem
• Confirm the display time is correct after any power outage, or the system will regenerate at the wrong hour

Every few months

• Clean the brine tank floor if you use rock salt or see sediment; pellet or solar salt leaves far less residue
• Rinse the brine well and float assembly so the float moves freely
• Run a manual regeneration and listen for the drain flow to confirm the cycle completes
• Do a quick hardness test at a cold tap to verify the system is still delivering soft water

Once a year

• Sanitize the brine tank with a resin-safe cleaner
• Have the resin bed checked for iron fouling, especially on well water
• Verify the hardness setting still matches your actual water and household size
• Inspect the bypass valve and connections for slow leaks

Which salt to use

Solar or evaporated pellet salt is the safest general choice. Rock salt is cheaper but carries insoluble material that settles in the tank. If your water carries iron, a salt blended with an iron-removal additive helps keep the resin bed clean between service visits.
