7 Signs You Have Hard Water in South Florida
August 4, 2026 · 5 min read
South Florida sits on limestone, so most homes get water loaded with calcium and magnesium. Here is how hard water shows itself around the house.
Palm Beach County water comes largely from the Biscayne and Floridan aquifers, which run through limestone. That limestone dissolves calcium and magnesium into the water, and those two minerals are what make water hard. Utilities soften municipal water to a point, but many homes still see hardness well above the level where scale starts to form.
The signs homeowners notice first
- White crust or spotting on faucets, shower doors and glassware straight out of the dishwasher
- Soap and shampoo that will not lather, and a filmy feeling on skin after a shower
- Laundry that comes out stiff, dingy or fading faster than it should
- Water heater that runs louder, heats slower or fails years early
- Low flow from shower heads because the openings are clogging with scale
- Coffee makers, ice makers and humidifiers scaling up inside
- Rings in toilets and tubs that come back days after cleaning
Why it matters beyond the annoyance
Scale is an insulator. A thin layer inside a water heater tank forces the unit to burn more energy for the same hot shower, and it shortens the life of every appliance the water touches. The plumbing itself narrows over time as deposits build inside the pipe wall.
How to know for sure
Guessing from symptoms only gets you so far. A quick on-site test tells you grains per gallon of hardness, iron, chlorine, pH and total dissolved solids, and that determines whether you need a softener, a whole house filter, or both. We test for free anywhere we serve and give you the numbers in writing.
