How Often Should a Water Softener Regenerate?

Too often wastes salt and water. Too rarely lets hard water slip through. Metered systems solve it — if they are set up right.
Regeneration is the cycle where the softener flushes the collected hardness minerals off the resin bed with brine and rinses them to drain. How often it should happen depends on three things: your water hardness, how many people live in the house, and the capacity of the resin tank.
Timer versus metered
A timer-based softener regenerates on a fixed schedule whether or not you used the capacity. If you travel, it wastes salt and water. If you host guests, hard water breaks through. A metered system measures actual gallons used and regenerates only when the resin is near exhaustion, which is why every system we install is metered.
Typical intervals
- A two-person home on moderately hard city water: roughly every 7 to 10 days
- A family of four on hard water: every 3 to 5 days
- A large home or well water with iron: as often as every other day
When to suspect a problem
If regeneration suddenly becomes much more frequent, look for a running toilet or irrigation tied into the softened line. If it stops entirely and salt use drops to nothing, the meter or valve needs service. Either way, a hardness test at the tap settles the question in a minute.
